What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a set of hands-on techniques that some DOs use to help diagnose, treat, and support the body’s natural function.

Using their hands, a DO may apply techniques such as:

  • Gentle pressure
  • Stretching
  • Resistance
  • Joint and soft-tissue mobilization

OMT may be used to:

  • Improve mobility and circulation
  • Reduce musculoskeletal strain
  • Support recovery from injury or illness
  • Complement medical or surgical treatment plans

Not every DO uses OMT in daily practice, and its role varies by specialty. However, all DOs are trained in these principles and carry forward the underlying understanding of how structure influences health.
